The Container Freight Rate Insight is an online research tool allowing you to keep up to date with the latest freight rate developments. Container freight rate data is updated bimonthly on all 600 routes, monthly on most high volume trade lanes and weekly on five key trades via Drewry’s Hong Kong-Los Angeles Benchmark and selected data from the World Container Index.
Each benchmark includes rates for both 20ft and 40ft dry box containers. Key trade routes covered include the transpacific, Asia-Europe, transatlantic, Middle East & South Asia trades, North-South trades (South America, Africa & Oceania), intra-Asia and intra-Europe trades. In most cases rates for both headhaul and backhaul trades are provided.

Tier 1 provides access to Trade Routes where you can view and print recent container freight rate data covering 600 port pairs across all the main trade routes around the world as well as in depth commentary and analysis.
Trade Routes provide the following features to aid your analysis of freight rate developments:
- On-screen reports give benchmark freight rates by port pair for the last four months.
- Rates are ‘All In’ i.e. inclusive of Base Rate, Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF), Surcharges and Terminal Handling Charges (THCs).
- Mouse over the on-screen ‘All In’ rate to reveal the Base Rate, BAF and THC values.
- Freight rates on individual port pairs are grouped into trade routes, together with Drewry analysis of market trends as well as carrier capacity and GRI notices.
- Graphs and information tables show all the key trends
- Additional information is given on current BAF surcharges for the main carriers.
- Users can select a preferred Trade Routes dashboard to focus on your key areas of interest.

Tier 2 Advanced Subscription to Trade Routes & Search Rates
Tier 2 provides access to the Search Rates database of container freight rates in addition to all Trade Routes features. Users can search Drewry’s entire library of freight rate data going back to January 2006 and download the results to your device.
Search Rates includes the following key features:
- Search and select single or multiple port pairs to view and download current freight rates of your choice to your device.
- Select and download freight rate history going back on 2006 to assess key trends and trade cycles.
- Download freight rate data to your device in Excel format.

The rate benchmarks represent spot market rates for Full Container Loads paid by freight forwarders to ocean carriers for a particular month or week. They are affected by seasonal and short-term supply-demand factors, notably by the peak season in the trades from Asia.
