Port Throughput Indices

The Drewry Container Port Throughput Indices are a series of calendar adjusted volume growth/decline indices based on monthly throughput data for a sample of over 340 ports worldwide, representing over 80% of global volumes. The base point for the indices is January 2019 = 100.

Drewry has developed a nowcasting model that uses vessel capacity and terminal duration data (derived from our proprietary AIS model) to make short-term predictions of port throughput.

Drewry’s latest assessment - April 2024

  • Drewry’s Global Container Port Throughput index fell slightly in February 2024, down 0.8% MoM to reach 109.2 points, although this is 8.3% ahead of February 2023. According to Drewry’s Nowcast model, the Global Port Throughput Index is anticipated to have fallen 1.9% MoM in March to 107.1 points, just 0.9% ahead of March 2023. While Greater China is expected to have seen a recovery in volumes, this is not enough to offset volume decreases in all other regions.
  • The Greater China Container Port Throughput Index plunged 13.3% MoM in February 2024 to 104.0 points due to the slowdown caused by the Chinese New Year holidays. However, the Index remained 5.3% ahead YoY. Drewry’s Nowcasting Model indicates a 2.2% MoM increase in the Container Port Throughput Index to 106.4 points in March, 2.7% lower than in the same period last year.
  • The North American Container Port Throughput Index rose 6.8% MoM in February 2024, up to 109.2 points, with combined throughput at the main West coast ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach up 28% YTD.
  • The European Container Port Throughput Index jumped 10.1% MoM in February 2024 to 103.5 points, 5.6% ahead of February 2023. The rolling 12-month average growth rate improved to -1.2% in February 2024, with Drewry’s Nowcast model indicating that this improvement will continue in March.
* Note that the index figure for Africa is based on a relatively small sample, and so should be viewed with caution
# Index figures for Feb 2024 include some estimates of port throughput data and figures for Mar 2024 are Nowcast estimates based on AIS data. Data for both periods are subject to subsequent revision
