Independent assessment of MPV vessel delay

Client: Confidential (Global logistics service provider)

Drewry was approached by a major global logistics service provider to undertake an independent examination of delays caused to a multipurpose vessel (MPV) voyage that took place during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic, to support defence of a damages claim made by a client. Drewry applied its extensive AIS analytics toolset together with its established expertise in MPV shipping, to present proof of evidence of specific delays together with analysis of the global / regional performance of the MPV market. Drewry’s consultants were able to successfully advise on the key characteristics of the Premium Project Carrier fleet, its mode of operations and interdependencies with competing sectors of containerships and dry bulk vessels.

The detailed analysis included validation of the vessel voyage and an assessment of delays and berth occupancy at ports of call using Drewry’s AIS-supported analytics toolset. The study also included an analysis of the Suez Canal closure impact and region-wide port congestion at the time of the voyage, specifically comparing waiting time and terminal time against pre-pandemic operations at the relevant ports. The client was able to use the evidence and expert opinion provided in the analysis to support its defence of the client claim.
