Productivity improvement in scrap loading
Client: Major port in Singapore
The productivity of scrap loading carried out by the client was very low. The port wanted to improve the efficiency of operations and reduce turnaround time, allowing berths to be utilised by more vessels.
Approach
- Operation on board vessels was observed to understand why the productivity was low and evaluate the scope for improvement;
- It was noted that trucks were arriving at the port at irregular intervals;
- The client was asked to provide weighbridge data and the weighment time of trucks was analysed;
- Truck drivers were reprimanded for delays and continuous checks were made on truck arrival time.
Result Achieved
- The situation improved with trucks reaching the vessel more regularly, resulting in 29% improvement in productivity over a 3 month period.
