Carbon Tax and New Fuel Forecasts

The European Union will be the first region to enforce “carbon taxes” in shipping via its Emission Trading System, which will penalise users of high-carbon fuels such as conventional fossil fuels and apply to shipments within Europe, as well as to and from Europe.

As the focus of commercial concern continues to shift away from inflated freight rates, many global shippers are now seeking to implement sustainability policies and measures within their procurement processes. The lack of consistency and visibility regarding carbon neutral shipping and associated costs is something on which all stakeholders; from shippers, ocean carriers, forwarders, regulatory bodies and consultants, need to find common ground.

Drewry is committed to this discussion and to help our clients implement sustainable ocean freight practices we have introduced a Carbon Tax and New Fuel Forecast Report which helps provide clarity in a rapidly developing and highly complex area.

Benefits of our new service to shippers include:

  • Identify suitable providers with whom to work on sustainability plans
  • Better understand the main sustainability strategies and investment plans of major ocean carriers and forwarders - and establish who the leaders are
  • Understand the impact of new fuel types and fuel taxes
  • Inform internal stakeholders/management about medium-term container freight cost increases resulting from the regulatory fuel changes on the horizon

The service comprises of two key deliverables:

  • Carrier Decarbonisation Guide (PDF Report) - providing an overview and comparison of the carrier fleet / Orderbook decisions as well as their carbon targets / roadmap
  • Carbon Tax and New Fuel Forecasts (MS Excel): Forecasted incremental cost (USD per TEU), per trade route and per Service of the different fuel alternatives (LNG, Methanol and Green Ammonia) and the EU’s ETS system. Method and assumptions for full visibility
